Reception - Mrs Harrison 2019 - 2020

Mrs Harrison

Welcome

My name is Mrs Harrison and I teach in Reception along with Mrs Stewart. I first came to Northway on my final teaching practice from Edge Hill University. The children, staff and ethos of the school captured my heart and after teaching in another school for my NQT year, I returned to Northway. I have now been a member of the teaching staff at Northway since 2006. As well as teaching in Reception I am also responsible for leading the development, progress, attainment and well-being of all children in EYFS and Key Stage One. I am also responsible for promoting the social, emotional and spiritual development of all children in my role as Religious Education and PSHE leader at our school.

Maths

Click on the documents, Maths WB 06/07/2020 in the documents download section on our class page. This week we are looking at addition. There are sometimes several challenges within each activity, try them all or try just one depending on the ability of your child. Remind your child what the add sign (+) means. When we see the add sign, we know that we are adding more to an amount. Therefore, the answer will become larger/bigger/greater than the number that we started with, unless we add zero. Remind them that if they are using a number line to count on, we count upwards and the numbers get bigger. You may wish to give your child physical objects, numicon or a numberline to support their additions. Or they may wish to use their fingers or use known number facts to help them. Remember to start on the biggest number and count on the smallest number.  Can your child complete the addition number sentences independently?

Don’t forget to play on Top Marks -Hit the Button. You can play on number bonds to 10 games and try to beat your own score.

Understanding of the World

We have been thinking about why planet Earth is special. Last week we looked at flowering and non-flowering plants.

Look at the labels around the plant in the diagram below.

Plants are so important, because they are home to many creatures. Lots of animals eat plants too.  Without plants, our wildlife would not survive. Click on the link below to see the life cycle of a butterfly.

Discuss how important plants are to wildlife. On your next walk look for flowering and non-flowering plants, search the stems and the leaves to see if you can find any animals living on them.

Talk to your child about the importance of planting trees and plants and looking after our environment in order to protect planet Earth.
