Safer Internet Day In Year 1/2

Lesson: Information and communication technology

Class: Y1/2 - Mr Wright Year: 2017 - 2018

As part of Safer Internet Day 2018, the whole of the school took part in a variety of activities throughout the day which taught the children about how to stay safe online. In our class, we read 'Buddy The Dog's Internet Safety Story' and discussed what actions the main character, Ben, should take in order stay safe when using a phone, tablet and computer. After listening to some fantastic answers by the class, each pupil then wrote a letter to Ben, explaining why he had made such good choices, like alerting an adult when he was unsure about a video and asking for help when a pop-up appeared.

In the afternoon, we focussed on the importance of being respectful to people online, highlighting how we only say nice things which we would be happy to hear ourselves. We created our own posters just like the characters in the story and discussed the difference positive and negative comments can have on people.

At the end of the day, some of our parents visited our classroom to listen to what we had been learning about and it was lovely to hear them say how impressed they were with our understanding of how to stay safe online. If ever the children are unsure about what to do, remind them to think of Buddy's song (to be sung to the tune of Frère Jacques):

Ask your grown up,

Ask your grown up,

Ask for help!

Ask for help!

Use your tablet safely,

Use your tablet safely,

Woof, woof, woof!

Woof, woof, woof!
