At Northway we are an extremely inclusive school. We adapt our teaching as much as possible to the individuals we teach to remove any barriers that our learners may face. By doing this we ensure that we are giving quality first teaching. However for some children this is not enough.

A child or young person has a special educational need (SEN) if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:

  • Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age or;

  • Have a disability, which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools, or post 16 institutions

A child under compulsory school age has a special educational need if they fall within either definition above or would do so if educational provision was not made for them.

Mrs Sumner is our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) whose role is to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils with a special educational need. She is also an excellent point of contact for the families of pupils with SEN as she is able to offer advice and support when needed. To arrange an appointment with Mrs Sumner, please contact the school office on 0151 526 2565.

To learn more about what Northway offers to its pupils with a special educational need please download the SEN information report below. Also you can find out what Sefton Local Authority offer pupils with SEN by clicking on the link detailed in the opening title of the school information report.

Sefton SEND Inclusion Services are keen to understand whether parents and carers are seeing an improvement in the help and support they are receiving from health, education, social care, and the SEN casework team in Sefton. There is a SEND Short Survey which they are keen for parents and carers to carry out. It is live from 14th September until 2nd October 2020.

Below is the link direct to the survey if you wish to carry it out.

Below is a link to the feedback flyer on a previous survey conducted in 2019.
