Bubble Closure

Monday 21st – Friday 25th June

Hello everybody, I am really sorry that our class bubble has had to close and that we won’t be able to see each other for a while, but that doesn’t mean that we have to stop learning. Here are some activities to complete whilst you are at home. Have a go at each one but please do not worry if you find any of the activities challenging, just do what you can.

Your child is expected to complete between 3 - 4 hours of learning per day. Work may take some children longer to complete than others. Please encourage your child to carry out additional learning around their wider curriculum topics, if you have time.  Here is a suggested daily timetable below to help:

English

English.jpg

Our English tasks for this week are all going to be based around the traditional tale “The Elves and the Shoemaker”. The story is available on a PowerPoint, eBook and audio book for you to read at your own pace and remember that you can keep referring back to it as many times as you like. The instructions for each task are at the top of the page and there are videos for each lesson to help you. Before you read this weeks’ story make sure you complete the prediction part to lesson 1!

The Elves and the Shoemaker Audio Book

In lesson 1, you are going to show your understanding of the story. Complete the prediction section by explaining what you think the story will be about. Then it’s time to get comfy and read the story using the PowerPoint or listen to the story using the audio book. Once you have done this check the meaning of any words you didn’t understand. You might do this on google or in a dictionary. Finally try and summarise the story in 1 or 2 sentences, remembering to only include the key points.

In lesson 2, you may want to re-read the story before having a go at answering the questions about ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’. Remember to read the questions carefully so that you understand what you are being asked to do, all the answers are in the text so you can go back and check.

In lesson 3, use the pictures provided to put the story back into the correct order. If you do not have scissors and glue, why not draw your own pictures to tell the story. Once the pictures are in the correct order, write a sentence next to each picture to explain what is happening in each part of the story.

In lesson 4, you are going to retell the story of ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’. Use your plan from lesson 3 to help you remember what happens in the story and in what order. Remember to punctuate your sentences correctly and try to include a range of adjectives.

Year 1 -  Try to use the conjunctions ‘and’ or ‘because’ to extend some of your sentences.

Year 2 – Try to use a range of conjunctions (e.g. and, because, that, when, but, etc.) to extend your sentences.

In lesson 5, you are going to edit and improve your writing. Re-read your story from lesson 4 from the beginning, reading each sentence carefully to check that it makes sense, it has been punctuated correctly and that the spellings look accurate. In addition to this, try and think of ways in which you can improve your writing, such as using different conjunctions or adding adjectives to provide extra detail. Use the help sheet for Lesson 5 and the Super Sentence checklist for ideas on how you can edit and improve your writing.

If your child completes their school reading book during the isolation, please allow them to read a book they are interested in. You can also check out our virtual class library were you can find games, audio books and reading books for your child to enjoy, click the link below:

Work through the ‘Phonics - Activity 2 PowerPoint’ and read each card carefully, there will be some real and nonsense words. Remember you can use your sounds chart or the middle of your reading record to help you.

Could you read each card? Why not go back and have a go at the ones you found tricky.

Activity 3: Quick Fire Reading!

Work through the Phonics - Activity 3 - Quick Fire Words - PowerPoint’ and read each word carefully. After you have read the word you need to decide if the word is a real word for Sasha or a nonsense word for Zeb by clicking on the correct person. Remember Zeb only speaks in an alien language. Be QUICK as each word has a timer with it.

Activity 4: Have a game of snakes and ladders!

For this game all you will need is a counter for each player, a dice and the ‘Snakes and Ladders Activity 4 worksheet’. Each player takes it in turns to roll the dice and read the words. If they read the word correctly they can then move to that space.  The player who gets to the end first wins the game. Remember to be careful of the snakes.
