Y3 - Mrs Shimmin & Mrs O'Connor 2019 - 2020

Mrs O'Connor

Mrs Shimmin

Welcome

Hello, my name is Mrs Shimmin and I teach in Year 3 with Mrs O'Connor. I have been lucky enough to teach at Northway since 2007 and having taught in other year groups, I now really enjoy being part of the Lower Junior team.

My name is Mrs O'Connor and I also teach Year 3. I have been teaching since 2007 and have taught at schools in Sefton and Liverpool before joining the Northway team in 2016. I have an undergraduate degree in French and a PGCE in Primary Education. When I'm not in school, I enjoy taking my dog, Charlie, for long walks on the beach. I'm really looking forward to this year and all of the exciting things we have planned for the class!

This week’s inspiration:

Week beginning: Monday 13th July

There is no teacher feedback task this week. Enjoy sharing your learning with the adult(s) in your home!

English:

Reading: We have uploaded two reading comprehensions for you to complete, called ‘The History of Comic Books’ and ‘Captain Apparatus’.

Spellings: Continue to work through the Read Write Inc book that you have taken home. Remember to focus on one sound per week, and do lots of different activities about that particular sound. Play some ‘Four in a Row’ with someone at home, ask an adult to dictate some of the sentences from your weekly sound for you to practise, and complete the different activities in your work book.

Handwriting: Complete the handwriting sheets, which will also help you to learn the words from the Y3/4 spelling list.

SPaG: Practise some grammar activities, using the attached SPaG mat, to revise the key grammatical points for Year 3.

Writing: There is a writing task attached so that you can continue to write, using lots of different genres. This week’s focus is to write a set of instructions. Look at the different things that you need to do to be a Year 3 writer and try to include as many of them as you can in your letter.

Your instructions could be about how to create an Anglo Saxon village, thinking about the things you have learned in your History sessions!

You may have also learned how to do something new during your time at home (such as tie your shoe laces or cook a new dish) and you could write the instructions/recipe to teach others how to do the same. Have a look at the recipes that have been uploaded for creativity as an example of how to present your own!

Maths:  This week’s focus is:  Measure and Statistics

Your Maths learning involves using the White Rose activities that have been set up specifically for Home Learning. The lesson sheets are attached in the ‘Documents for Download’ section below but please see the website for videos that accompany each lesson. Answer sheets are also attached, but please be aware that there may be more than one possible answer for some questions. There will also be a Friday Maths Challenge uploaded to the White Rose website at the end of each week.

There will be an additional activity for maths each week. Again this is optional. They will be called Independent Recapping activities and will revisit some recently visited key topics from the Year 3 Maths objectives.

Parents, please remember – do what you can and what is appropriate for your child!

Creative time: Look at the attached recipes and see if there is anything you’d like to have a go at making. Maybe you could even have an ‘end of term’ celebration!

Music Chill time: Use the cards in the downloads and follow the instructions given. This week is your final challenge to create a piece of music that fits to one of your favourite stories. It can be a section of a story, a page or even just a sentence – see if you can create music that would help you picture what is happening in your story. Good luck!

Science: Escape the room – read through and work out the clues to find the hidden clue to escape the lighthouse.

History/Geography: Research and produce a guide about one of the following places:

  • Canterbury Cathedral
  • Iona Abbey
  • Lindisfarne Priory

Include details about the history of the building, explaining why it was built and who lived or worked there and why it is significant in the history of Christianity. You can then go on to explain about the building as it is today and what visitors can expect to see when they visit. Include pictures or drawings in your guide and ensure your information is presented neatly and carefully.

Mindfulness challenge:  This week is all about being thankful for all the people who have been key workers during this time. It could be for someone in your household or think of somebody you have not seen for a while and send them any of these pictures when it is convenient to do so. Enjoy!

Well done to Rosie, Ethan, Oliver, Luke, Jensen, William, Orla, Dimitris, Isla, Olivia, Liam, Leo, Julia, Charlie, Layla and Mia who all earned points for our class this week and scored over 5000 points!

The winning classes from last week were Mr Wright’s class, Mrs Reardon's class, Mrs Farrington's class and Mr Tomkinson's class. Congratulations to them! This week’s brand new battle will start on Monday 13th July at 9:30am and will finish on Saturday 18th July at 9:30am.
