Y1 - Mrs Sumner 2019 - 2020

Mrs Sumner

Welcome

Hi, I am Mrs Sumner and I teach Year 1. I started teaching at Northway in 2008 after completing my teaching practice at Edge Hill University. I remember the first day I came to Northway for a tour of the school and I was made to feel so welcome by all of the staff and children. There is always such a lovely, positive and happy atmosphere at Northway!

HOME LEARNING – 29th June

Please find below all of your home learning for this week. Remember to do what you can and always do your best. We know you are working hard.

ENGLISH

Reading

Complete the two reading comprehensions for this week:

The Best Dress Ever (the question sheets get progressively more difficult so pick the ones most appropriate for your child)

Sunflower Life Cycle (read page 1 and complete page 2)

Spellings - Practise reading and writing words containing the sound for this week which is the ‘oo’. sound. It can be spelt in different ways e.g. u/u-e/ue/ew/oo. Some examples of words containing the ‘oo’ sound are: glue true June huge use blew chew grew new flew threw screw moon too boots

How many objects with the ‘oo’ sound can you find around your house? Can you find any words containing the ‘oo’ sound in your stories at home?  Practise writing sentences containing ‘oo’ words. Don’t forget to use a capital letter and a full stop.

Handwriting – complete the handwriting practise sheet. Alternatively, practise your handwriting on paper, ensuring that tall letters are tall and letters which go through the line do so.

SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) – download and complete the SPAG Mat. The mats get progressively more difficult so select one which is suitable for your child to complete.

Writing – Write a recount of something you have done. Look at the 'Writing - Recount Example' document for ideas about what to write about and remember to try and include all of the things in the checklist on the first page of the writing task sheet. There is also a ‘helpful hints’ document that you may wish to use to help you as well.

Maths

Focus: Place Value

Worksheets are attached in the ‘Documents for Download’ section below. Please see the White Rose website for videos that accompany each lesson https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/  You will need to look at their resources which are dated 22nd June for this week. There is also an 'Independent Recap' task for lesson 5 which asks you questions about all of the things you have learnt this week.

Teacher Feedback Task

Once you have completed your Maths worksheets, please ask a grown up to take a photograph of the one you are most proud of and email it to year1@northwayprimary.co.uk by 3pm on Friday. This is your Teacher Feedback Task for this week and I am really looking forward to seeing your work!

Science

This week, we will be focussing on how plants need the correct amount of water to grow and stay healthy. Read the ‘Plants and Water’ sheet and predict what you think will happen to the seeds. If you are able to, try the experiment at home and draw pictures of what each set of seeds look like after one week. Was your prediction correct?

Geography

This week we are going to compare our environment to India. Look at the images of Indian schools and their surroundings and talk about how they are different to ours. Can you use the words 'rural', 'urban', 'landscape'? Talk about the differences e.g. ‘In our school in England, we sit at tables, however in India, the children sit on the floor’. Make some lists, one detailing the description of our school environment at Northway in England and one showing the things common in Indian schools.

Art/DT

How can you join two pieces of paper without using anything else? People use the technique of weaving all over the world for different reasons. In India, it is often used to create doormats, hats and bracelets. Use some paper (it doesn’t have to be coloured or special paper) to create a loom and practise the technique of weaving. Follow the instructions in the ‘Files to Download’ section called ‘Making and weaving with a paper loom instructions’. You can also watch the following video which shows you how to paper weave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX_E4qiecVE

Remember to make sure you lie the paper flat when you weave so it doesn’t fall out!

PSHE

Play the ‘Emotions Board Game’ with someone at home. The game can be for 2-4 players and, when you land on each square, you must say a time when you have felt the emotion written on that particular square.

If you do not have a die at home then you can use an interactive one on this website:

https://www.online-stopwatch.com/chance-games/roll-a-dice/

Music

This week we will be focussing on adding movement to a piece of music. Watch the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaBe5dxomLM

What is the tempo of the piece of music? (Tempo is the speed at which the music is played).

Now go on the following website and play each clip:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/music/world_music/music_india4.shtml

How does the tempo (speed) change between the pieces? Move around your room to each piece of music. What movements would match the speed? Be careful not to fall over or bang into anything!

Next, play the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBGEY7FdV3Y

Stop the video after each movement and have a go at attempting these moves. When you have watched some / all of the video, decide which three movements you like the best!

Mindfulness

Complete the ‘Things That Make Me Happy’ worksheet, thinking about the different things that make you happy and drawing an idea into each thought bubble.
