I am Miss Jones and I will be teaching Year 1 with Mrs Thomas until Miss Veney returns from maternity leave. I have been lucky enough to have taught here at Northway for 2 years between December 2017 and February 2020. As well as this, I have also taught in other schools in Sefton and Birmingham.  In our classroom, we will have lots of fun and I am so excited to work with you this year!

Our PE day will be WEDNESDAY . Please name all PE kit and if your child has their ears pierced, please remove their earrings. Thank you!

Contacting the class teacher

Due to social distancing restrictions, teachers are unable to meet face to face unless meetings have been scheduled. Please use the class emails if you wish to contact the class teacher. If your concern is imminent, please contact the school office and they will pass the message on to the class teacher.

Week Beginning 04/01/21

The English tasks for this week are all based on classic poetry, focussing on the Victorian poem ‘The Queen of Hearts’. This classic poem is based on the story of Alice In Wonderland and was written over 150 years ago.

In lesson 1, read the poem several times and try to learn it off by heart. Once you have practised reciting the poem, perform it to someone in your family. Remember to use expression when you speak and you could even include some appropriate actions to accompany the words.

In lesson 2, look at the following pictures relating to the classic poem ‘The Queen of Hearts’ and think about what vocabulary you could add to the poem to improve it. Label the queen, the tarts, the knave and the king, including adjectives.

In lesson 3, use the vocabulary you used in the previous lesson and add appropriate adjectives to the poem to improve it. Once you have added a range of adjectives, write out your improved version of the poem in your neatest handwriting using the lines on the worksheet.

Spellings  - this weeks sound is ‘ear’

Remember to use phonicsplay.co.uk to practise using this sound when reading and writing. You can also continue to practise the Year 1 common exception words. These can be found in your home reading records or in the booklet in the Files to Download section of the page.

This week’s focus is Place Value. The lesson sheets are attached in the ‘Documents to Download’ section below. Remember to use the 100 square for support if you need it.

Lesson 1 – Place Value. Use the visual representations to see how many tens and ones are in the number.

Lesson 2 – 1 More Or 1 Less. Complete the worksheet in which you have to find 1 more or 1 less than the number on the robot’s tummy.

Lesson 3 – Missing numbers – Complete the number line by filling in the missing numbers. Use the 100 square if you need help.

In Science in this half-term, we have been learning about everyday materials and part of this involves describing the simple physical properties of everyday materials. Complete the worksheet in which you have to describe the properties of some everyday materials you will find this in the ‘Documents to Download’ section.

In History last half term, we learned about a local inventor called Frank Hornby. Using your knowledge, or research if you have to, complete the fact file that you will find in the ‘Documents to download’ section of the class page.

Download the P.E challenges from the ‘Documents to download’ section and have a go at completing a few of the challenges suggested. Which ones are your favourite? Can you challenge any one from your home?
